Most municipalities in Metro Vancouver operate an online mapping system or GIS. Although each mapping system is unique to the specific needs of each municipality, there is much common information to be found on each site regarding property information, zoning, infrastructure and more.

Founded in 1905, the Association of British Columbia Land Surveyors (ABCLS) is the self-governing regulatory body for the profession of land surveying within the province of British Columbia.
The Association is sanctioned under the Land Surveyors Act, which is a provincial statute that sets out the framework in which the Association and its members operate. The Association enacts bylaws and rules for the conduct of its members, and also establishes and administers the requirements for entry into the profession.
Membership to the Association is solely limited to holders of a BCLS commission or those in the active pursuit of their commission. The process of earning a commission as a BC Land Surveyor is a long and arduous process that takes many years to complete.
All BC Land Surveyors must have a university degree in Geomatics or equivalent before beginning a process of specialized learning. In this process the aspiring land surveyor is formally mentored by a practicing BCLS as an articled student (Land Surveyor in Training) for 24 months. The LST must also complete a series of field projects and exams before they can apply for their Professional Assessment Interview (PAI). The purpose of the PAI is to assess the professional competence of an individual who is nearly ready to become a land surveyor. Upon successful completion of their PAI, the LST will have finally have completed all the requirements and can receive their commission as a BC Land Surveyor.
